Associate Professor Ichiro Sakata
Professor Takafumi Sakai and Associate Professor Ichiro Sakata traveled to Myanmar March 25–30, 2017; initially, they visited the University of Medicine, Magway (UMMG). The journey to Magway, an administrative division in central Myanmar, was lengthy, involving air and vehicular travel from Yangon. The University of Medicine, Magway, was established in 2001; it is one of five universities of medicine in Myanmar. Professors Takafumi Sakai and Ichiro Sakata met regarding future collaborations and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between UMMG and Saitama University. The rector of the University of Medicine, Magway, Professor Khin Zaw, as well as Professors Mya Thanda Sein (head of the Physiology Department), Khin Nwe Oo (head of the Microbiology Department), and Shin Hnaung Lwin (head of the Pharmacology Department) joined this meeting. After greetings from Professors Khin Zaw and Takafumi Sakai, Associate Professor Ichiro Sakata introduced Saitama University. Next, Professor Mya Thanda Sein presented information on environmental pesticide exposure and lifestyle-related diseases. Finally, a discussion took place regarding an MOU between UMMG and Saitama University and further plans for research collaborations.
After returning to Yangon, Takafumi Sakai and Ichiro Sakata visited Professor Onmar of the Department of Physiology at the University of Medicine 1 (UM1) and discussed the collaborative research project that was launched last year to describe cells that produce motilin (hormone-stimulating gastrointestinal motility) in the developing gastrointestinal tract of the suncus. The conversation covered plans for additional experiments, the possibility of submitting a manuscript for publication, and the workshop about western blotting planned for January 2019 .
